500 Ties..Rotary Magic

One man, one dream….on a mission!  What more could be said about Henry Petithomme(Mr. “P”) the founder of Youth Power Movement.  The club heard from Henry at this weeks meeting.  His program focuses on youth and teaching them life skills that is better explained on his website.  IMG_1087

What he needed from us immediately was ties…what we did as a club and as a district was make that happen!  In four days we responded to this simple request of the Provisional IMG_1095Club of Coconut Creek at our District Assembly and we got him 418 ties with more coming in to get him to 500 ties for his kids!  That is the power of Rotary and the power of one club to make it a service project and then just add Rotarians to see the magic happen!!  Please reach out to Henry and invite him to visit your club via his website and become part of his dream to see this go national!  You rock Mr. “P”!!

Dictionaries for 3rd Graders

2013-04-01 18.08.50This week we learned about a fantastic project called The Dictionary Project (www.thedictionaryproject.com) that provides dictionaries to third graders.  There are several Rotary Clubs currently participating in the program in District 6990 (www.ri6990.org), we heard from Rotarian Elihu Phares a member of the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale Cypress Creek and also the district permanent fund chair for the Rotary Foundation.  We learned about how easy for approximately $2 per dictionary we can make the difference in a child’s life.  The statistics show that a child not connected to reading and education by 4th grade the lifelong literacy cycle is disrupted.  By simply committing to one classroom at a time and then one school at a time a combined effort from organizations across the state are making an impact right here in Broward County.
